For me it depends on what they are singing and who is singing it. To use examples already brought up, I don't like Bjork but I like Sigur Ros....so, I don't know. I don't go out actively seeking artists that use their voices as instruments or anything, I don't have a preference I just listen and like what I like.

Also, thank Dubs for pointing out that all rap does not suck. :)

In fairness it is easy to generalise, when most of the generic sh!t that's around today masquerading as Rap or Hip Hop.

I think the voice needs lyrics to be better than an instrument, but good delivery is vital.

Good point.
Sometimes the artist wants their voice to transcend the lyrics and become instrumental as you say paul. Other times the point is to get the lyrics across. So yeah, it's a maybe here as well hehe.

Not a bad thing, some people need to find meaning in lyrics, personally I find there's more to the music than the words... but even I want some lyrics now and again, Cohen for example.

So what do you prefer: the voice being used to transmit lyrical content, or using the voice as another instrument in the mix?

Both. But it depends on the singer's skills. There are some artists that sound amazing when they use their voices as another instrument. They complete the harmony. But it's not something that fits for all voices.

I think Sam Beam is one of the few who uses his voice as both a lyrical conveyer and an instrument truly brilliant. Some have good voices and good lyrics, but few are brilliant in both in my opinion
