Proud Jenny and Jen make town hall history
A mayor and mayoress know the needs of both sexes in their city...because they both used to be men.
Newly-elected Jenny Bailey, 45, had a sex swap in her 30s.
And after she made history by becoming the first transgender mayor of Cambridge, she chose partner Jennifer Liddle, 49, as her mayoress.
Jenny, who was a dad-of-two, said she knew she wanted to become a woman after getting married in her 20s. She added: "It was difficult but I came out of it a better person and I'm proud of that.
"I certainly do not want it to eclipse being mayor. If it damages the Cambridge mayoralty I will be so upset. I'm so proud of Cambridge. It's an honour to be mayor."
Jenny, who refused to reveal her previous identity, met Jennifer while having hormone therapy 15 years ago. The pair, both software engineers, hit it off straight away. They started their own firm JSquared, in 1994.
Jennifer was the first to go into politics with Cambridge city council in 2000 and Jenny two years later. Both are LibDems.
But the pressure of work and family - the couple look after one of Jenny's two boys - got too much and Jennifer quit politics.
Jenny, whose children are 18 and 20, had been deputy to mayor Robert Dryden.
Her ex-wife, who did not want to be named, said she was proud of her achievements. She added: "She'll make an excellent mayor. She is totally selfless and wants to help others."
But opinion on the streets of Cambridge was divided yesterday. One woman said: "It's disgusting." Carpenter Todd Growns added: "As long as they do a good job it's fine."
