During the Great Leap Forward as part of the "economic revolution" of China, a form of pest control was to bang pots and pans together in the hope that the cacphony produced would chase away the sparrows that ate all the grains and seeds.
Unfortunately, the theory back-fired because with the death and migration of so many sparrows, the real pests: worms and other crop eaters flourished and China was gripped by nationwide famiine...
