Aaah, it's great to be on holiday and I've finally got a bit of time to read (good old escapism girlie stuff) I'm on my 3rd book and have ruined everything AGAIN by cheating and reading the last page. I do this every time and just can't help it. There's never any major surprise at the end - the girl always gets the guy, aaaw!

I tend not to cheat, I'm a fast reader so it only takes me a few hours if I'm that into it, so I've never really thought about skipping ahead.

I do read the first few pages when picking out a new book. I've had bad experiences with not liking the writing style of an author, so I just want to make sure it reads well before I pick it up. I once read a book where the entire thing was written in present tense. It was awful.

I need to start reading again! I wonder if anybody has any recommendations that don't involve the words "Harry" or "Potter"?

Spoils it though, doesn't it? Especially a thriller where things could go one way or another.

sometimes i'm so into it i cannot resist - i'll start a book around 8 pm and at 3 pm i'll be in agony to find the plot.

Oh yep, know exactly what you mean. I've been told that reading is supposed to help me fall asleep so I tried it a few nights but kept reading until the early hours of the morning and was knackered.

I read really slowly which is why it's only something I do when I'm on hols. I've got no will-power though to make it to the end wthout a peek. I can't recommend anything which might stimulate the brain cells I'm afraid although I know there are people on here who might be able to help.

It all depends and yr reading material - forget sleep if you're reading James Ellroy, his books are not only excellent but very violent ! I recommend "American tabloids".
A trick i use when i cannot sleep : i tell myself i shouldn't sleep.
And there are nights when i have insomnia and then i just don't care - i read, listen to the radio....i know i'm going to be a wreck the day after but i can cope with it.

Abs, I don't want stuff that'll give me nightmares - I don't sleep enough as it is. What is supposed to be the average amount of sleep a night. People can't believe it when I say I can't survive on only 7. I feel like I've been hit by a truck otherwise. My husband only sleeps for about 6 (if that) - I then feel like the lazy slob cos I can't get up in the morning!

7 hours is too little for me too.
James Ellroy books don't give nightmares because they're so gripping you cannot sleep.

Are they VERY explicit? and describe everything in minute detail so you get a good picture in your head.

I know what you mean Debbie. I usually need about 9 hours to feel ok the next day but I can't sleep that long when I'm working so I'm always sleep deprived during the school year. I have to find time to sleep during the weekends though because I suffer from spasmophilia and I don't rest properly nasty fits kick in. What I hate most is having to be in the classroom at 8am. I'm not as efficient as I should be...
