Burgled vs. burglarized

Again a question to native speakers: which term would you use, burgled or burglarized? As far as I can see from Google, it's a question of being British or American.

The question came up cos I wrote to iTunes support to get my stolen laptop deauthorized. Don't want the w*nkers to listen to the music I paid for. Anyhow, this support guy started his reply by saying that he was sorry to hear I'd been burglarized. I always thought the term was 'burgled'.

I've heard both.

Personally I wouldn't use either, I'd say Robbed.

I think there's a technical difference between burglary and robbery.

At a burglary, thieves come into your home when you're not there and steal things.

At a robbery, they use violence or a threat of violence to the victim (e.g. with a gun or a knife) to get to your things.

That's actually the Legal difference (in Ireland anyway) between Theft and Robbery. Robbery includes a threat of violence.

...then there's also Larceny (stateside) but I'm not too sure about that!!

You're right, of course, but Burgle just sounds Silly. Hehe, I'm not sure people make the distinction.

Also it reminds me of this:

A burglar with a burger? lol

I sometimes work as an interpreter, also in court, so getting the distinction right is not entirely irrelevant :o)

I think the same distinction exists in most countries. It does in Denmark too.

That's exactly it. He was a huge mascot for McDonald's in the 70s/80s. I was always a Grimmace fan myself....

Burgle just sounds weird to me even if it's technically a word. Never heard anyone really say it. I get the same hamburgler image as Dakota.

I would say burglarized. Good idea about the iTunes thing. If you email them you might get my brother. He does email support for iTunes.

Is his name Jared? Cos the guy introduced himself as Jared from iTunes, and it was indeed in Texas :o)

Actually, there's one more thing about iTunes... I downloaded some stuff that's not on this computer. How do I get that music back, can I download it again? Thought of this just now :oS

No, his name is Mike. But I bet he knows him. There are less people than you might imagine who work there.

I am not totally clear on all the rules but generally there is one free pass. If you tell them your story they'll usually give it to you again.

I know he's dealt with people who lost all their music b/c they didn't back it up and they'll give them their entire library again- but just once.
