A story of love printed in The Sunday Times . The definition and the meaning? …. No right and no wrong.

Andre Gorz and his wife Dorine.

( Andre Gorz , a French Philospher and founder of the magazine “ Le Nouvel Observeteur”.)

At the same time and on different page, Eric Clapton pours out his heart in his Autobiography of his Life and loves. His magnetic attraction to Pattie Boyd and the more complex road of love , ignited by alcohol , and drugs. His star related , auto attraction of beautiful women and the need for love , unrequited , outside the boundaries of acceptable behaviour.

Andre’s account seems love perfected. A joint suicide at aged 84, and 83 (respectively) by lethal injection. Before this act , Andre wrote a 75 page Letter to his wife ( published a year earlier ) and an attribute to his wife.

He writes …” It is now 58 years that we have lived together and I Love you more than ever” …” You have shrunk 6 centimetres and you weigh just 45 Kilos and you are still beautiful , gracious and desirable.”

This man adored. This man lived in and outside her body. Nothing in his life was as important to him than Dorine. Saying that, does not pay him justice , as his feelings are so well recorded and beautiful.

After 58 years married , he writes “ Lately I’ve fallen in love with you all over again and I once more carry inside me a gnawing emptiness that can only be filled by your body snuggled up against me”.

Finally “ Each of us would like not to survive the other’s death we’ve often said to ourselves that if , by some miracle , we were to have a second life , we’d like to spend it together.”

On the other page (of the same newspaper) Eric is in complete mayhem . Its hard to know what is love or need or sexual attraction .

Either way, the power of music , plays a very big part . Obviously in Eric Claptons life he dedicated music to Patti Boyd in Layla , Shes waiting , Just like a prisoner, Same old Blues.

Andre Gorz relates how how when in the treatment clinic with his Dorine, he heard all of Schuberts Ninth Symphony . “ It echoed in me , every note.I remember every moment spent at the clinic”

I suppose the reason I felt this was all so interesting is that the music we listen to and love , whether by chance or choice is as important as love itself. Very powerful .

BTW :Both Books are available:

A Letter to D.Story of a Love. - Andre Gorz
The Autobiography -Eric Clapton

aye I've read the excerpt of Eric Claptons autobiography too but somehow I not sure what to make of him after reading it. Comes over a bit characterless I'm sorry to say cos I think he's one of the greatest guitarist ever.
Maybe I should not have read it. :(

Must dig out the paper for the Andre Gorz one...sounds more uplifting somehow, thanks for posting :)

Ooh I gotta get his autobiography. He mentions that he was wearing the boots my grandad made him when he went to prison in New York.
