This is totally NON-Travis related...but hey, this IS the general chat... :P
So I watched a documentary the other day on Colony Collapse Disorder (or CCD). And it really scared the crap out of me. Have any of you hear of this? It's basically the phenomenon of the abrupt disappearance of entire bee colonies. I was totally oblivious to this and how huge of a problem it's becoming. In some parts of China bees have been completely wiped out due to the use of pesticides and farmers there actually have to self-pollinate their crops. It's also becoming a huge problem in North America and parts of Europe. You don't really think about it, but it's scary to think what would happen if bees went extinct. There would be no pollination of plants and we'd all starve to death :/ This really freaked me out! Has anyone else heard of this? Scientists say it poses an even bigger threat than global warming and I believe the show I caught on TV said that by 2035 if nothing is done about it there will be NO bees in the United States. |

| That's really funny because my mom just mentioned this to me today. I didn't know what it was called though. I don't know much about it, but I knew that bees are very important because they basically pollinate everything. Doesn't sound good. |

| Yep I've heard about it . Was on the radio a few months ago. The importance of the Bee and pollination. Amazing but I had forgotten about it as quickly as I heard it so glad someone is worrying about it ! |

LOL, I also thought it had something to do with your bowels collapsing.
Anyhow, I've actually heard of this phenomenon. I think that some bee races were more prone to this than others. You're right that it's a very scary thought. We can't pollinate everything artificially.
So just remember this the next time you swat at a bee :o) |

Ditto. I opened up the thread and was severely disappointed with the Bee chat. I thought the first sentance "Scared the crap outta me" would have been really apt for a discussion on colon collapse. Oh well, I can but dream. |

It would have been a brilliant pun though. |

I've been hearing the buzz (ha ha) about this since early spring. My mom was telling me yesterday about the show you must have seen. There's a Wikipedia article that covers most of the theories about what could be causing CCD.

Seems it's not just in the US, but in Europe and other areas as well. It is scary. "Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees. Pleeeeease!"
At one time, I actually thought it would be cool to keep bees. It seemed like a nice thing, with the wax and the honey and all. Then I saw what people have to do to get the honey. That crazy astronaut outfit, the smoke machine, and swarms of angry bees buzzing about. I changed my mind. (I really laughed when I saw that Covered In Bees video someone posted a while back.)
Colon Collapse would be awful, too. |

LOL! Sorry to disappoint you, however there is a clearly visible “Y” at the end of the word. Big difference. :P |
