lol, it's ok! They're supposed to disappear once you've approved them.
You need to go to someone's profile to add them. Just like MySpace, really. Actually, this board has an uncanny resemblence to MySpace...

The friends bit is just for requests, you can see your full friends list if you click on your name where it says 'logged in'..it turns into a myspace style page then
