When my parents had those noises in their attic, it turned out to be a stoat or whatever they're called. They're bigger than mice but not as disgusting as rats :o)

Hmmm....I think I could cope with it being anything but a rat! The noise has stopped now but I'm sure it'll come back later...

Maybe it's the toilet cistern... Mine sometimes makes a sound like a revving motor, and it only goes away if I pull the button thingie a little a couple of times.

Hmm, however much I wish it was just the toilet cistern, I'm absolutely certain it's some sort of rodenty-type animal!! I wish it would go away...my boyfriend, however, thinks it's quite cute and whatever creature it is just trying to find a warm home for the winter!
