Hi, I'm doing this thing for the kid I tutor (*tries to make it sound respectable*) and I found this expression I don't understand:

To go for a float.

I don't know if it means to go swimming, to go sailing or what...
Can anybody please help me? Thanks in advance :o)

Hmmm I don't think that is something that comes up to much in conversation. My best guess would be that it means to go swimming, but I really can't say for sure. Sorry for the lack of help...maybe someone else knows more?

Thanks Lindsey! I think it might be swimming.
The context would be... *coughs*

Fetch me my jimmy choo flip flops,
Where is my pink prada tote?
I need my tiffany hair band,
And then I can go for a float.

What in the world? Is this in this kid's school book? Sounds like cheesy R&B lyrics. Yes, in this context I would say it means go swimming or laying in one of those floaty chairs in the pool.

No, that's a song from High School Musical 2.
I had this bright idea of asking her what music she liked and maybe we could do a little game since tomorrow is our last class.
I should have been less democratic and bring Yellow Submarine tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your help :o)

I've never actually heard any of this High School Musical stuff but I assumed it was all kid-friendly and wholesome. Boy, was I wrong! FETCH me my Jimmy Choo flip flops??? Wow...great message to send the kids!

Yeah, I say you pick the music from now on! :P

I've never watched the movies so my first direct contact with HSM are these two songs she chose.
The other one is a cheesy love song, I can't decide which one I hate less!

LOL. I"ve never heard it either (though friends with kids who've seen it swear it's not too bad. I don't believe them).

But I know there is a blonde spoiled snob character. I'm sure this is part of one of her songs.

Jimmy Choo flip flops indeed.

HSM is huge here. and yes, i believe that is a song sung by this blonde girl, the one that sings not so good :P i honestly prefer other disney channel movies like the lion king xD

Here HSM is huge too. They even came here to do a show, there was a reality show to select the characters for the "argentinian movie", the ice tour, etc, etc... So far I had managed to stay away from it, now I know two songs xD.

And yes, the voice of that girl is TERRIBLE! I had to deal with it last night and wanted to kill her with my bare hands.

that is really sad haha, you should have chosen something else like 'patito feo' xD oh yesss! hsm la seleccion! good lord, it was all day on disney channel! and after, there was the movie 1 and 2! i can't understand it... the boy sings awful, the blonde one is really barbie-like, and for what i've read, the story is nothing more than a 'bring it on' with music, or a very bad 'grease' :/

English isn't the problem here...it's having a student who listens to crappy music.

Introduce him to Travis and all will be better!
