in keeping with the question raised about jeff buckley deserving the accolade of boy-genius on the strength of one rather ordinary album - what about kurt cobain?
cobain had talent as a songwriter that's not in question. "smells like teen spirit" was a defining song, but if you listen to "nevermind" today there's not a whole lot that holds up to repeat listening. nirvana hit the scene at a moment that couldn't have been more perfect, right on the cusp of a sea change in popular yoof culture in this country.
of course the massive success of "nevermind" laid waste to the existing alt.music scene in this country with every megacorp signing up all and sundry to beat the grunge horse to death.
so what's cobain's legacy - corporate rock as the norm or big influence on upcoming stars of the future?
neither. a talented guy who got lucky and then turned into the thing he said he most despised (i.e. whiny millionaire with no self control).
(for the anoraks out there who'll whine about there's been a thriving alt.music scene in this country if you'd just look for it, shut up and fuck off back to pitchfork)

| Nirvana annoy me. Maybe I would think different if I was an angry teen in the early 90s... But blah, I'm not, and I don't really like em. |

| Agreed. Nirvana weren't all that great. They just hit the nail on the head at the right time for them |

yeah, it's all relative innit. cobain was talented but how the way people were acting when he offed himself was toe-curling. fucking courtney love playing out her nancy spongen fixation for the whole nation, hey that rhymes, can i have a contract? |

There was a BBC documentary on this a few months back, where they intervewed loads of people from his home town. including his councillor and ex-girlfriend, I thought they were gonna do the usual and make a tribute program but it was actually quite objective and insightful, The general concensus seemed to be he was a attention seeking brat, he dumped his bird as soon as Nirvana started to make it, incedentaly after Dave Grohl joined, which people seem to forget... Nirvana wasn't just Cobain, Dave Grohl has a certain amount of talent too which must have influenced them. |
